Well, How About Not Getting Locked Out in the First Place?

Easier said than done, right? But is it really that hard to prevent a lockout? There are many things that you can do to make sure that you always have a key for your locks. Sure, there are a few situations that you may not be able to control. However, if you always have a back-up plan in mind, you’ll have a great solution for those unforeseen situations. So, what can you do to avoid getting locked out? Here are a few things that the pros recommend.

  1. Keep your keys close by

This tip may seem a bit weird. Who leaves their keys far away expecting to find them whenever they need them? But, you maybe surprised to find out the amount of people that just leave their keys laying around in random places. If you’re out and about, check for your keys before leaving every stop. If you’re in a mall, check for your keys before leaving each store. It’s a simple thing. But forgetting to ensure that you always have your keys may cause you to continually experience lockouts.

  2. Use a key finder

Key finders come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes you won’t even notice that it’s a key finder until you inspect it closely. But, these devices are extremely helpful when you need to locate your keys. If you know that you are very forgetful when it comes to where you last placed your keys, then a key finder may be a great device for you to own. They’re not expensive too. Make sure you check them out.

  3. Store your keys on a big key chain

If you’re not a fan of key finders, the next best thing may be to use a very conspicuous key chain. If you tend to misplace your keys amidst your possessions, having a key chain that is easy to locate can make a huge difference. If you like bold and bright colors, go for it. If you just prefer to have an item that is large enough not to get lost in the midst of a lot of items, then go for that too. Just make sure that it’s something that you won’t have a problem carrying around.

  4. Always have a set of spare keys nearby

Most locks aren’t sold with just one copy of the key. In many cases, you’ll get at least 2 copies. But, if you only have one key for your lock, you can always calla locksmith to make an extra copy for you. Getting a key copied is not usually very expensive. But, the cost associated with making the keys often depends on the type of key that’s being made. So, be aware of that.

However, getting an extra key for your lock may be one of the best decisions you ever make. If you happen to break or lose that single key that you have, you can always use the spare. Just make sure it is always kept in a location that is easy for you to access but difficult for intruders to find. So, it would be a bit pointless to keep spare keys for your house inside the house, unless you have another spare located somewhere outside. It doesn’t mean you have to hide it under a potted plant. Maybe you’ll give it to your neighbor for safe-keeping. But, just keep it somewhere secure.

Sometimes you can’t avoid being locked out. So, here’s what you should do if you do get locked out.

  • Double Check to see if you’re really locked out.

Sometimes when emotions are high and unforeseen situations arise, our judgment can get clouded. So, in the heat of the moment when you try that door, or you reach for your keys and realize you can’t open the door or find the keys, you may panic. It’s easy to forget that they’re other doors on the property. It’s easy to not notice the open window that’s close by. But, it is very important to gather your thoughts and take a minute or two to think about your options. Then you may realize that there’s another way inside.

  • Call a locksmith for help

If you’re not so fortunate to find another way inside and you have no spare keys, it may be time to call a locksmith. They should be able to get that lock opened without damaging your property.
